I joined University of Mary's SNDU group in the fall of 2019. In that time I have assisted with student involvement tables, attended the Day of Service event at Saint Bernard Mission School, and been elected as one of the Peer Relations Officers of our school's program.
I joined University of Mary's SNDU group in the fall of 2019. In that time I have assisted with student involvement tables, attended the Day of Service event at Saint Bernard Mission School, and been elected as one of the Peer Relations Officers of our school's program.
On the Day of Service at the University of Mary, I travelled to Saint Bernard Mission School on the Standing Rock Reservation. I got to interact and eat lunch with students, learn about the Montessori teaching Philosophy that has been implemented in their school, and read cultural stories to students in small groups. We ended the day by facilitating and engaging in a competitive game of floor hockey with the students.
Diversity Experience
During the fall semester of 2019, I was enrolled in a practicum of Cultural Diversity. The goal of this practicum was to engage with diverse populations that would help me positively impact student learning. For this experience, I decided to travel back to the Saint Bernard Mission School and learn and interact more with the students and the culture there. I also took a deeper look at my experiences with my preschool class at Noah's Ark Preschool to appreciate the interactions I have with diversity in the classroom. These experiences increased my awareness and appreciation for the cultures and diversity of others, and helped me see how effective classrooms support the diversities among them. I learned that it is important for students and educators to not only embrace diversity in the classroom; but also learn from, communicate, and collaborate with others from different cultures and backgrounds. I will use what I've learned and what I will continue to learn, in order to implement a classroom environment that acknowledges and supports all learners.
